Tioman vs Redang: which East Coast island is right for your trip?
Both are stunning, both are accessible from KL, but they offer very different diving experiences. Here's how to choose.
## The short answer
**Tioman** if you want bigger pelagic action, more developed dive sites, and a variety of accommodation from chalets to resorts.
**Redang** if you want calmer waters, easier shore diving, and family-friendly logistics.
## Tioman in detail
Tioman is bigger, with sites like Tiger Reef, Labas, and Sepoi giving you wall dives, pinnacles, and the occasional whale shark sighting in season (May to August). The northern sites can have strong currents β comfortable AOW or higher.
Getting there: bus or drive from KL to Mersing, then 2-hour ferry. Total transit time about 6 hours from KL.
## Redang in detail
Redang is more boutique β most operators package dives into a 3D2N or 4D3N stay-at-resort deal. Sites are calmer, vis is reliably 15-25m, and shore diving is easy off most resort beaches.
Getting there: drive or fly to Kuala Terengganu, then 30-min boat. About 7-8 hours from KL total.
